Barbados has long been known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters, friendly smiles and, of course, rum!

What many people are unaware of is the spectacular beauty that lies beneath the surface of the sea. The island has been blessed with miles of coral reefs teeming with an incredible variety of sea life, excellent visibility and an abundance of fascinating ship wrecks.

POPULATION - 266,800.
Ethnic mix - 93% African, 3% European, 1% Indian/Asian/Chinese, 3% mixed race.

CAPITAL CITY - Bridgetown.

LOCATION - The most easterly of the Caribbean islands. By air, about 4½ hrs from New York, 5hrs from Toronto and 8 hrs from London.

GEOGRAPHY - 166 square miles, measuring 21 miles long x 14 miles wide.

HISTORY - The original inhabitants were Amerindians. Settled by the English in 1927. Third oldest parliament in the world. Slavery abolished in 1837. Gained independence from Britain in 1966.

GOVERNMENT - Politically stable and ranked by the United Nations as the world's number one developing country. A member of the British Commonwealth, the constitution is based on the British style of parliamentary democracy.

ECONOMY - Based on tourism, agriculture and manufacturing.

ELECTRICITY - 115/230V 50Hz.

CURRENCY - The Barbados Dollar is tied to the US Dollar at the rate of US$1 = Bds $1.98. Other currencies fluctuate so check with local banks or the press.

RELIGION - Predominantly Anglican, but over 100 religions practicing in harmony.

TAX - Departing passengers must pay a departure tax of Bds $25.00. 15% VAT is usually included in prices quoted. 7.5% VAT and 10% service charge will be added to your hotel bill.

TIPPING - Usually 10% - 15%

WATER - Safe to drink from tap.

WATERSPORTS RATES - Water Skiing US $ 30, Hobbie Cat US $ 80.

SEASONS - Barbados is warm all year round with temperatures ranging between 27ºC - 32ºC. Water temperatures are usually around 28ºC, so if diving a short 2-3mm wet suit or a dive skin is recommended but not essential. There is a rainy season which starts in May and lasts through to August, but even in the rainy season there is plenty of sunshine for everyone.
